The bursae work like a cushion, ensuring that the movement is smooth and friction-free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have two primary bursae in our hips: the iliopsoas bursa (located in the front of the hip) and the greater trochanter bursa (which covers a bony bump at the outer edge of the hip called the greater trochanter.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You may develop trochanteric bursitis if:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the muscles and fascia in your hips are tight,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you&#8217;ve suffered an injury to your hips,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you&#8217;ve had hip surgery,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you play a sport that involves repetitive hip movements (like running or cycling),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of your legs is longer than the other (this can affect how you walk, which can irritate the bursa),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are bone spurs or calcium deposits on your trochanter (if your bursa rubs against these growths, it can become inflamed),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you have poor posture, scoliosis, or rheumatoid arthritis,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your feet are flat.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Trochanteric bursitis causes pain along the outside of the hip.<\/strong> When the pain starts, it&#8217;s sharp and intense. After a while, it becomes a dull ache. The pain may spread across your hip and travel down your leg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trochanteric bursitis can be aggravated by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lying on the affected hip (which is why the pain may be worse at night),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sitting for long periods,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">running, jogging, jumping, or cycling,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ascending or descending stairs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, trochanteric bursitis can be treated easily. As soon as you notice that your hip pain is becoming less intense, you can reduce how often you exercise.
