The big toe is made up of three bones and two joints.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bones are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the distal phalanx (at the top of your toe),\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the proximal phalanx (in the middle),\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the metatarsal (the longest bone in your big toe).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two joints are the proximal interphalangeal joint, which connects the top and middle bones, and the metatarsophalangeal joint (or MTP), which connects the middle bone to the long bone. Constant pressure on the toes \u2013 which can come from the structure of your foot or how you walk \u2013 can change the alignment of the foot bones; the tip of the big toe is pulled toward the other toes, the metatarsophalangeal joint begins to stick out, and a bunion slowly forms. In some cases, a bunion may grow so large that the big toe moves on top of or under the second toe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Causes Bunions?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact cause of bunions is under debate. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup><a href=\"#\" class=\"lnb-footnote-anchor\" data-group=\"lnb-footnote-1\">1)<\/a><\/sup> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s thought that bunions may form because of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wearing tight shoes or high heels,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a foot deformity,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genetics,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a foot injury, <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatoid arthritis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most obvious sign that you have a bunion is a bump at the base of your big toe. Other symptoms of hallux valgus are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constant or infrequent pain. The discomfort may occur when you walk, put weight on or try to move the affected foot. You may also experience pain when you are not moving your foot.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A reduced range of motion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corns or calluses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">The area around the affected joint is red and feels sore or stiff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a bunion, you may be at risk of developing:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bursitis (inflammation of the bursa, which is a fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion for the bones),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metatarsalgia (inflammation and pain at the ball of the foot),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a bunionette (a.k.a. a tailor\u2019s bunion).
