Our back provides a home for the spinal column, a canal that contains the spinal cord and nerves. The spinal column is made up of thirty-three vertebrae divided into four regions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cervical spine (your neck),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thoracic spine (mid-back),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lumbar spine (lower back),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sacrum and coccyx (the back of your pelvic wall and tailbone).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs. These rubbery, pad-like structures have a tough exterior and are filled with a gel-like substance. The intervertebral discs absorb shock, protect the vertebrae, nerves and brain, and help with movement. The vertebrae are stabilized by strong connective tissue called ligaments. The muscles in our back help us stand, bend, lift and flex; they are connected to bones by tendons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A Pain in the Back<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back pain is one of the most widespread conditions throughout the general population, including children and adolescents.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <sup><a href=\"#\" class=\"lnb-footnote-anchor\" data-group=\"lnb-footnote-1\">1)<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is estimated that up to 80% of the population will suffer back pain at some point. Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missing work and visits to the doctor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two types of back pain are <\/span><b>acute back pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins suddenly and may last for up to six weeks, and <\/span><b>chronic back pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which develops slowly and lasts longer than three months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain can occur anywhere in the back, ranging from a dull, continuous ache to a sharp, stabbing or burning sensation. The pain may shoot down your leg or radiate to another part of your body depending on the cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back pain may be aggravated by standing, walking, bending, or lifting objects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Common Causes of Back Pain Are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unhealthy posture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor physical fitness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing or sitting for long periods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craining your neck forward &#8211; a bad habit many of us fall into when working in front of a computer or driving.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Straining a back muscle or ligament &#8211; often the result of lifting an object repeatedly or incorrectly or lifting an object that is too heavy. Back muscle and ligament strains can also happen during exercise, especially if you&#8217;re not observing proper form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tense muscles or muscle spasms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An abrupt, awkward movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An injury to the back or an accident.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeping on a mattress that doesn&#8217;t keep your spine in proper alignment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Conditions That Commonly Cause Back Pain Include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bulging disc. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of your intervertebral discs has flattened and is sagging, putting pressure on one of the surrounding nerves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Herniated\/slipped disc.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The gel-like centre of the disc has squeezed through the exterior and is putting pressure on the spinal nerves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sciatica. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our sciatic nerve originates in the lower back and runs down the leg, branching off around the knee. Sciatica can occur if a herniated disc compresses the sciatic nerve&#8217;s root.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Osteoarthritis.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Also called &#8220;wear and tear arthritis&#8221; and degenerative joint disease, this is the most common form of arthritis in the spine. The condition causes the cartilage between the joints to wear down, which leads to inflammation and pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Osteoporosis. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiny cracks form in the vertebrae because they have thinned and weakened.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Spine curvature disorders. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common spine curvature disorders are:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lordosis (or swayback) &#8211; the lumbar spine curves inward,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scoliosis &#8211; the spine curves to the side,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kyphosis &#8211; the upper back is rounded.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, the cause of back pain is unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"video\"><\/a>OSTEOPRESSURE FOR BACK PAIN\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To maximize the benefits of our Osteopressure routine, press forcefully but be mindful of your body.
