This is the protruding hip bone which can be found sticking out at the side of your body around waist height. And if you wear jeans, it&#8217;s almost exactly at the height of that small &#8220;hip pocket&#8221; (watch pocket). <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">From there, just <strong>move your fingers in and down by around two centimeters<\/strong>. At this point, you need to take your time to<strong> find the most sensitive spot<\/strong>. Then use the mini ball (held in the fingers of both hands) to <strong>massage this area very slowly<\/strong>. Do this by rolling the ball around this area in small, very tight spirals. Use intense pressure while you do this \u2013 but keep just <strong>below your personal pain threshold of ten<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Just keep rolling for a moment, but also notice any place where the <strong>sensitivity is even higher<\/strong>. You should try to dwell on those particular spots. Don&#8217;t roll too fast, and<strong> keep up the highest possible contact pressure<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">This pressure should only be restricted by the need to keep your pain level below ten. You should still <strong>be able to breathe calmly<\/strong>, and should not have to tense or brace yourself against this pain. If it gets rather too sensitive, then just ease off the pressure a little. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">We use this exercise to relax an important part your musculature, the <strong>large thigh extensor<\/strong>, or thigh muscle which extends down to the knee. It&#8217;s this muscle which is partly responsible for exerting too much pressure on your hip joint \u2013 and thus also for your osteoarthritis. If we can get this muscle to relax a little, your hip joint will feel better and<strong> your pain will be reduced<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">You&#8217;ll also notice that the longer you do this, the less sensitivity there is. Then apply the <a  href=\"https:\/\/shop.liebscher-bracht.com\/en\/foam-roller\/foam-roller-set\/?itm_medium=text&itm_source=shop&itm_campaign=en.roi.encyclopedia-of-pain-hip-pain-foam-roller-&itm_content=foam-roller-foam-roller-set\"  dpc-external=\"true\"  target=\"_blank\" >mini massage ball<\/a> to that spot. If you can manage to sit up while you do this,<strong> you can use two hands for the massage<\/strong>. Otherwise, you&#8217;ll have to support yourself with one hand, and use the mini massage ball with the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Once again, you need to<strong> use a lot of pressure<\/strong>. And if you find this difficult with one hand, then lie down and use both hands to massage this spot to reduce the muscular tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">You should be <strong>turning very small spirals again<\/strong>, and keeping the pressure on. The muscle you are targeting now is the <strong>hip flexor<\/strong>. This very large muscle is mostly much too short because of the amount of sitting we all do. The hip flexor muscle extends right through the entire abdominal cavity to your spine.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Your hip flexor extends its pull from down at your inner thigh, through your pelvis, and on to the back of the spine. Your hip joint sits in between. And if your hip flexor muscle is too short, it just increases the pressure on the hip joint. And once again, this pressure is partly responsible for your osteoarthritis pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">This hip pain increasingly restricts your movements. So as a result, the cartilage is no longer properly supplied with nutrients \u2013 because <strong>the angles and extent of your movements are getting less and less<\/strong>. So squeezing out the cartilage and then relaxing again allows this area to <strong>soak up fresh nutrients<\/strong>. This all helps to refresh and rejuvenate this area, reducing your pain in the process. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">So your rolling massage should be nice and slow, but keeping up the pressure. This time, you should use the<strong> midi foam roller<\/strong> from our<a  href=\"https:\/\/shop.liebscher-bracht.com\/en\/foam-roller\/foam-roller-set\/?itm_medium=text&itm_source=shop&itm_campaign=en.roi.encyclopedia-of-pain-hip-pain-foam-roller-&itm_content=foam-roller-foam-roller-set\"  dpc-external=\"true\"  target=\"_blank\" > foam rolling massage set<\/a>, which will be in contact with the outside of your thigh. The <strong>circumferential groove of this roller<\/strong> ensures that the<strong> pressure is applied to the sides<\/strong>, which makes the massage less painful since you<strong> don&#8217;t directly massage the bone underneath<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul id=\"exercise1-2\">\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Take care<\/strong> now: Because the outside area you will be rolling extends up into the pelvis \u2013 an <strong>area which is extremely sensitive<\/strong>. So it&#8217;s best to get an impression of what you&#8217;ll be doing before you start. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Place the roller <strong>beneath your outer thigh<\/strong>, and swing your other leg over and down to the floor. This should give you some stability once you start rolling. Though this position is a little tricky, it&#8217;s the best option because you can let gravity do all the work while you focus on moving over the area little by little. The midi roller needs to be down at the lower end of your thigh so that you can roll upwards from that point.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">If you simply can&#8217;t manage this lying on the floor, the <strong>alternative is to sit in a chair<\/strong> and just <strong>use your hands<\/strong> to roll the same area.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">You will be aiming to <strong>roll the thick band of muscular tissue<\/strong> which runs <strong>from the pelvis all the way down your outer thigh to the knee<\/strong>. Rolling <strong>slowly<\/strong>, and<strong> keeping the pressure on<\/strong>, move slowly upwards from just above the knee. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">As you roll, all the debris and metabolic waste lodged in this area will be squeezed out of the fasciae. And once the roller passes over, capillary action will refresh everything by soaking up a fresh supply of nutrients. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Rolling on very, very slowly, you can use the precise positioning of your trunk and pelvis to roll as much of the <strong>most sensitive areas<\/strong> as you can. Keep the pressure high, but always remember to stay<strong> below ten on your personal pain scale<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">You will eventually reach an outer thigh area where you will <strong>notice a bulge<\/strong>. This is where your thigh bone protrudes, and in anatomy this area is called the greater trochanter. Here, several important muscle attachments occur, and so it&#8217;s usually very sensitive. But don&#8217;t let that put you off. You could perhaps ease the pressure a little by lifting yourself up slightly, but still continue to roll over this spot.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">While rolling, just remind yourself that it is this <strong>pain which will bring healing<\/strong>. To roll without pressure would be counterproductive \u2013 but always keep your pain levels below that important threshold of ten. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Once you have passed the trochanter bulge, your body contour moves inward again. This area too can be sensitive, but <strong>keep up the pressure and keep rolling on<\/strong>. You will be rolling away the established muscle tensions, which has important implications for your joint health. You will gain mobility, stop the wear and tear process, allow your body cartilage to regenerate, and thus improve your osteoarthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Continue rolling slowly <strong>along the iliac bone<\/strong> until you finally get to what is called the iliac edge, or iliac crest. The best one to use for this foam rolling massage is our <a  href=\"https:\/\/shop.liebscher-bracht.com\/en\/foam-roller\/foam-roller-set\/?itm_medium=text&itm_source=shop&itm_campaign=en.roi.encyclopedia-of-pain-hip-pain-foam-roller-&itm_content=foam-roller-foam-roller-set\"  dpc-external=\"true\"  target=\"_blank\" >mini foam roller<\/a>. This is small enough to hold comfortably in both hands, yet firm enough to <strong>put pressure on the adductor (thigh-pulling) muscles<\/strong> of your inner thigh. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Beginning at the knee<\/strong> end of your inner thigh, <strong>roll slowly and firmly upwards<\/strong> along the whole length of your <strong>adductor muscles<\/strong>. This action will move all the liquids and waste deposits which have accumulated around your musculature and its fascial tissue. The result will be twofold: Your body&#8217;s capillary action and lymphatic system can remove this waste, and having thus cleaned the area, your<strong> cells will be able to breathe again<\/strong> and once more <strong>absorb fresh cell fluids<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Continue your rolling right up to the groin area. You may find it easier to lie back as you roll the last few centimeters i<strong>nto the top inside corner of your thigh<\/strong>. Keep your<strong> left leg in contact with the mat for balance<\/strong>, and spread your arms out in front so you can lean and support your body weight. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Beginning at the knee end, <strong>roll very slowly using your body weight<\/strong> to apply the rolling pressure.<strong> Rolling slowly intensifies the effect.<\/strong> You will need to drop to your elbows as the rolling angle flattens, and if you need to add more weight, you can always cross your other leg over on top at this point.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Rolling slowly on and on, you will eventually roll carefully past your groin area until you<strong> finally reach your &#8216;hip spine&#8217;<\/strong> (SIAS) with its protruding bone. So your bent left leg will keep you balanced and stable, whilst you get further support for your body weight using your arms spread out behind you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>In this region, your back pulls into your gluteal muscles, which span the pelvis. Your hamstrings also connect to the pelvis, while your hip joint sits in between. So your rolling here<strong> reduces the tension and stress on your hip joint<\/strong>. And as your rolling treatment reduces that tension, so the consequent regeneration will bring <strong>positive benefits for your osteoarthritis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Now notice you are rolling closer and closer to the ischium bone in your <strong>lower pelvis<\/strong>. This can also be <strong>very sensitive area<\/strong>, because there is a lot is happening in this region. When rolling over the ischium with its heightened sensitivity, remember that rolling an extra-sensitive spot means the roll massage will bring even greater benefits at that point.<\/li>\n<li>As you roll slowly over the buttocks, you will now<strong> need to lean on your elbows for support<\/strong>. And if you also tilt your pelvis a little, this will a)<strong> reduce the load on your central sacrum region<\/strong>, and b) <strong>help to spread the rolling pressure more evenly across the entire buttocks region<\/strong>. It will also help you roll right up to the edge of your ilium (lower pelvic bone). With your legs on the floor and your arms spread behind you for support, use your trunk to move over the massage ball once more in small spiral movements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>In this region, the <strong>most sensitivities<\/strong> are sited<strong> at the top<\/strong> where you&#8217;ll find the middle gluteus muscle (the gluteus medius) \u2013 which is especially short in most people. This shortening also brings tension, which in turn affects the minimus muscle which is close by. Between them, these muscles hinder the hip joint completely, which in turn causes more pain and exacerbates your pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dwell on these upper areas for some time to get the most benefit from this exercise. Once you have <strong>thoroughly rolled and massaged this area<\/strong>, your exercise, and in fact the whole sequence, is now be complete.
